He would arrive at the studio in his mint-condition 1955 Ford Thunderbird. “I love my job,” he said in a 1998 interview. “If the studio was open on Saturday and Sunday, I’d be there on those days, too.” Lyles figured he actually went to work for Paramount at age 9 when he was hired to distribute handbills and bumper stickers for the company’s theater in his hometown of Jacksonville, Fla. He left for Hollywood as soon he graduated from high school. “I left on the day coach with two loaves of bread, some peanut butter, a bag of apples and $48 in my pocket,” he recalled in the 1998 interview. Throughout his life, Lyles went just by the initials A.C., explaining that was the name his father had used as well. It was an old Southern tradition, he said, to just use initials rather than a full name. The full name, Wheeler said Monday, was Andrew Craddock Lyles. Lyles was married to Martha French in 1955, in a ceremony attended by Reagan and Cagney, among others. He is survived by her. They offered up a lot of material that directors and actors could work with in fashioning straightforward, semi-patriotic espionage and action-adventure movies. Each adaptation was a hit: The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears. But despite the success, the authors relationship with Hollywood was often contentious. While he enjoyed the exposure, he regretted the lack of creative control. Giving your book to Hollywood is like turning your daughter over to a pimp, he famously said. He took potshots at a number of films, Kilday noted. He didnt like that movies like Clear and Present Danger and Patriot Games didnt simply reproduce the plots of his novels, which were too complex to fit into a two-hour screenplay. Clancy also criticized Fords casting in those two films, saying the actor was too old to play Ryan, but appreciated Afflecks portrayal in 2002s The Sum of All Fears. Affleck told the Los Angeles Times that Clancys realism made his books, and their film adaptations, successful. When you read one of his books, you had the distinct feeling that he was depicting military or espionage situations exactly as they really are, Affleck said. Other spy books feel invented, while his feel like genuine accounts of events that took place but that no one knows about. I think the movie adaptations have risen and fallen in direct proportion to how well they kept his sense of authenticity and nuts-and-bolts realism. Baldwin, who originated the Ryan character in 1990s The Hunt for Red October, called Clancy a great writer and a real gentleman of the old school in a post on Twitter Wednesday. ___ Follow AP Entertainment Writer Sandy Cohen at www.twitter.com/APSandy . ___ AP Movie Writer Jessica Herndon contributed to this report.
